Chia Seeds…superfood extraordinare!


Handy tips & tricks for everyday consumption. This is such a little power bomb we felt it necessary to share again :))




  • Chia seeds are the richest natural plant source of omega-3 fatty acids…8 times more than salmon…also provides bowel-regulating fibre as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, & zinc.


  • Chia seeds are cholesterol-free, gluten-free & low GI… highly stable due to its powerful naturally occurring antioxidants.


 It has no calories, so is a dream for dieters.


  •  Chia Seeds can be stored for years with no deterioration…a unique feature, it turns gelatinous when it gets wet. When added to water and allowed to sit for 30 minutes, chia forms a gel, meaning that it helps your body think it is full, without adding calories!
  • Chia seeds are ideal for enriching many different foods… sprinkle ground or whole, eat them as a snack or mix them with flour when making baked goods.

Chia gel

This is a very useful gel to have handy in the fridge as it versatile and can be added to many foods. Add 1 part chia to 9 parts water. Whisk continuously to prevent clumping. Wait a few minutes & then whisk again. Let stand 10-15mins. Give one last stir before placing it in airtight container & store in refrigerator up to 14 days. Simply mix in the chia gel to add some nutrients. You can add as much as required. The original food will remain fairly unchanged & you have all the goodness of the chia. It is also a healthy addition to stir fries, pies, salads & anything else you can think of!Cabbage Salad

  • Sprinkle on cereal, yoghurt, salads, crepes, fish, chicken….
  • In drinks, smoothies, shakes, juices….
  • Put in when making muffins, pancakes, all sorts of baked goods…
  • Mix into sauces, mayos, jams, chutneys….chicken & pistachio sausage rolls

Research suggests that this gel-forming reaction occurs in the stomach & is thought to create a barrier between carbohydrates & digestive enzymes, slowing the breakdown of carbohydrates into sugar & prolonging endurance. Chia also acts as a sponge, absorbing toxins, lubricating the colon & strengthening peristaltic action, as such it is an appetite satisfier, so useful to dieters. It has also been valued for calming the nerves & strengthening the memory.

We always add chia to our pancake mix for weekend breakfasts, & pretty much sprinkle wherever we can. Makes a great garnish…

  1. This is the first time I’ve ever read enough about chia seeds to be intrigued. I just thought it was a new fad and I never jump on the fad bandwagon. Now I’m off to buy chia seeds! Where do you get yours?

      Yes they truly are amazing little gems. I get them at any organic shops, like Kunara in Forest Glen, or even the big Chemist Warehouses…

  2. I had no idea they were soooooo versatile ??? I have them each morning in my juice but now it looks like they can go into so many more places 🙂 I buy them each week with my groceries @ Woolworths. Thanks for your healthy tips n storage suggestions !!
